Why E-Waste is Harmful

Electronic equipment contains toxic materials that can pose health and environmental risks, particularly when disposed of in landfills, where toxins may leak into the soil and ground water. Only about 11 percent of electronics are recycled, according to the recent U.S. EPA estimates and 1-800-GOT-JUNK? wants to help make recycling easier. Read more about disposing electronic equipment that contains toxic materials.

Televisions contain toxic materials that come from the monitors and plastics they are made of. Read more about recycling televisions here. Read more about the environmental dangers of getting rid of TVs.

Computers are a serious solid-waste problem. Batteries and computer monitors along with circuit boards, LCD's and plastics can all be recycled. Read more about recycling computer equipment.

The amount of cell phones needing to be recycled every year is growing. Cell phone circuit boards, batteries, LCD's and plastics can all be recycled. Read more about the challenges of reuse and recycling cell phones.

Nearly 3 million tons of consumer electronic waste was generated in 2003 alone, according to the most recent U.S. EPA estimates. Read more electronic waste statistics.
